As the polling for Delhi University Students Union is scheduled on Friday the biggest concern, for candidates and students organizations, is whether the students will turn out for voting on 3rd September. Considering holiday on today and 4th, 5th September chances of students to come out for voting is not very bright.
Though, the university administration is expecting high turn out this year upto 60 percent considering increase in the number of seats but the fact is that candidates worried about turn out considering continuous holiday on 2nd, 4th and 5th September. “It will be really a great thing even if the turn out comes to 45-50 percent as it was last year, says Akshay, a candidate for DUSU election. Due to the continuous holidays it is difficult to bring students to the college just for voting”, he adds.
True, students are normally go outside or they prefer to stay at their homes in such situation. But we have concentrated this time more on the hostels and students reside in the lodges rather than day scholar, says an AISA candidate adding that campus colleges too may give better turn out this time. Apart from it candidates eying on evening colleges too for better turn out. As per estimate of the university about one lakh students may cast their votes during the elections. Students of 51 colleges will cast their votes during the polls through 875 voting machines. Meanwhile candidates are keeping their finger crossed for better turn out.
