Whether country’s largest central university Delhi University is at the verge of complete shutdown? Chaotic situations have already been created in the recent times due the imposition of semester system at the undergraduate level without proper infrastructure and in an autocratic manner and the issue already stirred the university for a long time. Stiff opposition from both teachers and students communities have already been in news for a long time.
Now, teachers as well as students as well as principals too (though tacitly) say that the shut down is not far away as the scene is being created to grant extension to the Vice–Chancellor Deepak Pental so that he could go ahead for autocratic imposition of semester system as MHRD wants. If believe on Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) sources, the teacher body is preparing itself for the situation. Though, it is completely on the discretion of the Visitor of the university, i.e. President of India to take decision to grant extension or not. But the decision is normally taken on the recommendations made by MHRD in this regard.
The Search Committee, to find out a suitable candidate for new DU-VC, has not finalized its work as yet as it was already constituted very late. The term of present VC is being completed on 31st August. Apart from it the two members of the committee, who are very close to present DU-VC have been pushing names who are known as member of Pental’s team. It is also notable that the seat of Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University is vacant for last few months. In such a situation there is no second-in-command in the university right now. Though, university officials say that Director, South Campus may take charge of the Vice-Chancellor when V-C leaves the office as he is the senior most official in the university. It is different matter that the Director too has a kind of ‘bitter relationship’ with a teachers’ association.
More staff councils reject semester system:
Meanwhile, staff councils of more colleges rejected the plan to implement semester system. After Kirori Mal College, staff councils of ARSD and Daulat Ram College too have rejected the proposal for implementation of semester system as directed by the Vice-Chancellor. Even, Daulat Ram College has suspended the order in which it said its first year science students to deposit fee for semester examination.
Opposition from students:
Candidates for DUSU elections too have strongly opposed the proposed semester system in the colleges. Talking to fachcha.com on the issue Jitendra Choudhary, ABVP candidate for DUSU President post, strongly opposed the semester system. He said the system is suitable for professional courses but not for normal courses in the university like DU. Compelling students for the exams in every four month is a bad experience. It is worse than schools, he said.
Harish Choudhary, NSUI candidate for DUSU President post too says that every system has good and bad points but the way it is being implemented is very bad for the student community.
It is notable that outgoing office-bearers too have already been opposed the implementation of the new system in the college.
