Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Deepak Pental is facing the toughest protest in his career in the emergency meeting of Academic Council, called by him to get approval for the introduction of semester system in the undergraduate courses of science stream. The amount of resentment among the Academic Council members can be understood by the fact that after six hours of the meeting agenda item could not be discussed.
On the other hand the Cobalt-60 episode has been raised by the members vociferously and a condolence massage was also passed for Mayapuri incident, an AC member told fachcha.com. The demand of resignation of Vice Chancellor was also raised during the meeting on the negligence on selling radioactive material to a scrap dealer.
Issue of non-consideration of suggestions received in form of CD by the university administration has also been raised by the members. Strong protest was lodged by the members saying that suggestions from the most of the colleges like JMC, Miranda House, LSR, Kirori Mal Colleges and others have not been even seen by the Vice-Chancellor. Demand has also been raised to consider suggestions of the colleges in this regard.
Much ruckus has been made when the issue of introduction of restructured course (semester system) has been raised. Members unanimously said that no set procedures have been followed in this regard and several streams of science have already rejected the proposal in this regard. Question was also raised that how Vice-Chancellor can make announcement about the introduction of semester system in the coming session when even the basic work of restructure of the course has not been completed?
Prof. Deepak Pental has lost all moral right to continue in office of the VC. Either he should resign or he should be removed from office by the Visitor (The President of India). In the Academic Council meeting yesterday his proposal for introducing Science courses framed by flouting all laid down University norms and statutes & ordinances of DU Act were opposed not only by all elected teacher representatives but also by a very large number of University Heads and Professors. Fearing defeat and humiliation he run away from the AC and shouted ‘passed-passed’ from outside the AC hall. This astounded all AC members and forced the elected teachers to sit on a sit-in-inside the AC hall which is still continuing.
The NDTF warns the government that there will be a grave crises in the University if the VC is allowed to continue with his dictatorship and illegalities. The responsibility for the precipitation of crisis would be squarely with the VC.
The NDTF wants to appreciate AC members for holding a 2 minutes silence on the Cobalt 60 tragedy and asking the VC to quit in keeping with his moral, administration and legal responsibility for selling Radio Active matter as scrap.
