India’s latest in Math: A new way to find prime numbers

India’s recent contribution in the field of mathematics is “a fascinating new way to tell whether numbers are prime”, Noted mathematician Prof. Marcus du Sautoy, the Charles Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science, Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford has praised India’s contribution in the field of mathematics.
Prof. Marcus, who is visiting India to deliver his lecture on ‘The Music of the Primes’ at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore on 10th May said that several concepts like early idea of the calculus, concept of zero and others had been contribution of India to the world.
Terming Mathematics as ‘universal language’ he said that this language could bring cultures and countries together. During his visit, Prof Marcus du Sautoy will meet faculty and students at institutes across India and key Indian academic partners.
The Research Councils UK Office in India, UK Science and Innovation Network and the Indian Institute of Science are organising a high profile lecture series. This will be delivered in India throughout 2010. The series will showcase the cutting edge research and link it to the various challenges facing the world today.
