The Ministry of Home Affairs has approved a Scholarship Scheme for offering scholarship to twenty-five candidates every year, getting admission to selected Medical Colleges from the academic session 2010-2011. There will be reservation for SC, ST and OBC candidates.
Central Para-Military Forces for the purpose of attracting talented medicos to their medical services have offered a unique Scholarship Scheme of Rupees ten thousand per month for the total span of the study i.e. four and a half years for 25 meritorious students under CPMFs Medical Scholarship Scheme. Meritorious and physically fit students can immensely benefit from this Scholarship Scheme. Through this Scheme, they can not only pursue the studies but also get an attractive career in organized disciplined Central Para-Military Forces. In CPMFs, medicos get four time scale promotions in addition to the opportunity to scale newer heights in combatised hierarchical system of Central Para-Military Forces i.e. getting promotion to the level of DIG/IG/ADG Ranks. The CPMFs (namely Assam Rifles, BSF, CISF, CRPF, ITBPF, SSB and NSG) have a vast network of 39 Composite Hospitals and about 550 Unit/Trg institution Hospitals to provide health care coverage to about 8 lac force personnel and their families all over the country.
The detailed terms and conditions of the Scholarship Scheme are available on the websites of BSF (http:// www.bsf.nic.in/) and other CPMFs. The names of the Medical Colleges concerned, prescribed procedures and forms are available on the websites.
For the academic session 2010-11, willing and deserving candidates having confirmed admission can download the application form from the above mentioned websites and can submit their application through their Principals to ADG(Medical), CPFs, Tigri Camp, New Delhi (telephone No.011-26045015) within three months of their admission or before 31st October 2010 whichever is earlier. After selection, they will have to complete the course in time and thereafter serve in Central Para-Military Forces for a minimum period of ten years for which they are required to sign an agreement.

Coming out of the deep slumber of over six weeks after Cobalt-60 episode in Delhi, in which one person died due to exposure to radioactive material and six other injured, Delhi Government has issued a guideline to all the heads of the hospitals, medical centres, diagnostic centres, medical labs using radioactive equipments/consumable for its safe disposal for the safety and security of human life.
Delhi’s Health Minister Kiran Walia said that the Principal Secretary (Health) was asked to issue advisory/guidelines for disposal of the radioactive waste and the Pr. Secretary has issued the guidelines read with above said rules ensuring disposal of the radioactive materials.
All hospitals and Health Care Centres who deal in any manner with radioactive waste of any kind have to follow stringent procedures against any radiation exposure to humans. This needs to be given top priority through an effective process of controls.
The Minister has also told the heads of hospitals, medical centres, diagnostic centres, medical labs using radioactive equipments/consumables necessarily to keep a record of all such equipments and consumables in the hospitals/ medical/ diagnostic centres and laboratories so that routine inspections by the competent authority or Government Agencies could be carried out if and when needed.
The Health Minister has asked all concerned to strictly adhere to the relevant sections of the Atomic Energy Act (33 of 1962) and the Rules framed there under namely Atomic Energy (Safe Disposal of Radio Active Wastes) Rules , 1987 and Atomic Energy (Radiation Protection) Rules, 2004, which interalia prescribed detailed guidelines regarding medical exposure, potential exposure, personal monitoring, quality control and even go to the extent of appointing radiation workers and Radiological Safety Officers etc. Clearly, adherence to these Rules by medical/diagnostic centres, hospitals etc. is mandated. This also includes adequate surveillance of likely leakages, emergency preparedness, adopting adequate safety norms while decommissioning radiation installations etc. There are penalties prescribed for violation of these rules. The recent detection of radiation exposure has brought to focus the emergent need to safely deal with materials and equipments like radiological and radiotherapy equipments and isotopes used in nuclear medicines etc.

The Union government has given approval for enhanced pay scales of faculty of Autonomous Institutions of Medical Institutions under the Department of Health and Family Welfare. 2420 faculty members will be benefitted by the decision, taken by the Union Cabinet, according to Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Faculty members of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal and LGBRIHM, Tezpur will get UGC pay scale. The revised pay scale will be effective from the 1st January 2006.
After AIIMS, Maulana Azad Medical College, Vardhmaan Mahavir Medical College and some other medical colleges in Homeopathy and other system of medicine Delhi is getting ready for another medical institution to cater its students for medical and health related education.
The city government is planning to open a Medical University in the city.
Though the plan has not taken concrete shape but high level sources in Delhi government say that University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS) may be upgraded as independent university by detaching it from Delhi University. This may be done on the line of formation of Delhi Technological University (DTU) by converting Delhi College of Engineering into a full fleged university. The sources say that this will be done on the basis of recommendations of Knowledge Commission. The proposed university will work under Delhi Government.
