It may be celebration time for those who have been selected in IIT-JEE but the IIT topper (Delhi zone) Sahal Kaushik has no time to party. Indeed he is busy these days in a camp in Mumbai to fianlise his preparations for Science Olympiad. He has already cleared 1st stage of the Science Olympiad.
In an exclusive conversation with fachcha.com JEE-2010 IIT topper and the youngest successful JEE candidate, 14-year old Sahal said that he is so busy in the camp that he could not get proper time to talk with his family or even his mother these days. Party is a big thing right now. “This is true. We have even not celebrated any party till date after the announcement of result. Since 26th May, when the result of IIT-JEE was announced, to June 1st we had been replying media queries everyday. Thereafter, we came to Mumbai as he had to participate in the camp”, his Ruchi Kaushik told fachcha.com.
We have been waiting for Sahal’s father too who is an Army Officer. He could not come as leave had not been sanctioned earlier. But he is coming on 16th May, says Ruchi. Sahal’s father Tapeshwar Kaushik is a Colonel in Army and currently posted in Assam. “Once he comes we will go together to a restaurant on a dinner in South Delhi. Sahal likes Chinese so we have to give treat for it, she says.
Sahal’s top priority is Physics. He has chosen to IIT-Kanpur, IIT-Roorkee and IIT-Madras to get his choice of subject. Sahal is very good in Geography and Biology too. Sahal, a student of Vandana International School has mostly studied at home under guidance of his mother Ruchi. By profession a doctor, his mother left her career and become housewife to nurture her children. I am fully satisfied with my decision, says Ruchi adding that she had to face a lot of pressure when she decided to give up her career.
According to Sahal he had been studying six to seven hours a day to clear the exam but it was very systematic. As far as school result is concerned his result is average i.e. about 73% in 12th and 76% in 10th standard.
It is a matter of great joy for over 13000 candidates of IIT-JEE who have qualified country’s one of the toughest entrance tests. But a large number of IIT-JEE aspirants couldn’t make it. There number is over 4.3 lakh. Need not to say that most of them have been waiting for their result of other entrance tests like AIEEE, state level engineering tests and others.
fachcha.com has brought some of other courses which are comparatively easily available and have better future prospects. A large number of such courses are available in Delhi University, where mission admission is just going to take off.
PHYSICS:
It is a traditional pure science but its scope and career prospect are very wide. Even, engineering colleges can not run their courses without this conventional science. Postgraduates and research scholars of this stream of science are in demand for teaching, research, scientific studies and analysis and several other works. Bright postgraduates may get offer from defence services, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, DRDO and
other areas too. In other word career in this field is not lesser attractive than an engineer.
CHEMISTRY:Chemistry is another important area of pure science. But a bright scholar of this stream is always in demand specially those who specialize in area like organic chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Bio-Chemistry and some other areas. Apart from teaching and research there is a good demand for Chemistry students in labs, industry, health related institutions and many other areas.
MATHEMATICS:Known as queen of science, Mathematics has very wide spectrum, from basic book- keeping to super computers everybody needs mathematics. Teaching, research, computer, management etc. are the areas where an expert of Mathematics is in demand.
ELECTRONICS:
It is the area which comes under applied science. Limited seats are available for the course as it is not offered at every college. But career prospect is bright and a good degree in this field may open plethora of opportunities in the telecom and electronic industry. There is good scope for research and teaching too.
COMPUTER SCIENCE:Despite all pressure due to recession the craze for computer science is still on. Reason: India excels in the field and the country has highest number of patents in the field of computer science. There is no dearth of job for fresh graduates too in this area.
INSTRUMENTATION:
Instrumentation is a specific area of applied science and its skill is used in the instrumentation industry which is itself a huge industry in the country. Since there is very limited number of seats for the course (even in Delhi University) so its graduates are always in demand.
BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE:
Biomedical science is another area of applied science related to health and anti-pollution industry. Its graduates get attractive offers even at the campus level.
There are some other area like Polymer Science, Bio-Chemistry and some other area where entrance is comperatively easy than JEE and have better career prospects.

In a meeting, convened at Kanpur, most of the directors of the IITs have the view that major reforms are needed in the selection process so that genuine talents could get seat in the IITs throughout the country. Some of the directors had the view that due to aggressive preparation, made by coaching institutes to the students, and their robust presence in the metros have hampered the future of students of deprived areas and those who could not avail coaching facilities.
