chandan.sharma@fachcha.com
Why enthusiasm and energy of our young generation go waste in the country like India? I have been some of the lucky participants, attended an interactive session of Professor Vinaysheel Gautam, Founder Director, IIM-Kozhikode and got opportunity to listen him. Prof. Gautam is known for his straight and bitter comments, whether his audience like or dislike he follows his own way to tell the truth. He left Indian Civil Services, over 40 years ago after knowing some of the latent secrets of Indian bureaucratic system and joined teaching profession.

According to Gautam, scores of entrepreneurial efforts go waste in the country despite investing lot of energy and capital by the Indian youth. There may be lack of skill, devotion in some of the cases. But in most of the cases their efforts aborted in the midway due to discouraging environment, created by our so-called steel frame of the country and the political system, irrespective of parties or personalities.

According to government data about 55 percent of the country’s population is young. A good percentage of the young population wants to be entrepreneur. But unfortunately over 90 percent fail to do so despite their honest efforts. According to a data, presented in the Parliament last year, entrepreneurs of only two states could achieve their success rate over 10% in the country – Gujrat, with a success ratio of over 40% and Haryana with about 12%. In other rest of the states the percentage of failure is 90 percent or above. Delhi too, claimed as the vibrant city, is not an exception and it is under the rest of the state category.

Why the situation is so grim in the city like Delhi. Again, reason is discouragement by bureaucratic system and political patronage to the system of ‘as usual’. The government keeps a blind eye on the blunting of the efforts of new entrepreneurs by their own officers and staffs. For instance, the city government, unable to formulate a policy for new media for past several years, thanks to its bureaucratic system and lack of political will. Chief Secretaries changed, Directors of DIP either resigned or transferred but the things remained as usual. Entrepreneurs kept knocking doors of the government, officials, from Chief Secretary to Special Secretary and Directors waiting for years so that things could change. But the system is so callous for the new comers and their nexus with the established conventional organisations are so strong that their all attempt to go to pillar to post becomes a matter of joy for the officials and staffs as well as government. Even, some times they help established organizations by creating new obstacles for the new entrepreneurs. It is another matter of fact that the SME sector is the second largest employer of the country and saved country during recession period.

The recent glaring example of sab chalta hai is the non-participation of Delhi’s tableau in the Republic Day parade. The concerned department did not participate as it had to compete with other states and had to show its ability among them. But the best way was to stay away from it like to keep themselves away from the decisions about new media as policy was not there. So what should a young entrepreneur or an energetic youth do? Wait to be ruined. If somebody even get success despite all these in the dog bites dog environment – Hats off to them to emerge as winner despite all odds.

Management is more favourite destination for women than other technical courses, especially in comparison with engineering. According to the recent reports, presence of famale candidates is higher in the institutions like IIMs than the IITs or other engineering institutions.

Government report indicates that over 17% students at various IIMs in the country for 2011-12 Post Graduate Management Progammes are female while IITs have just 14% female students. Though the reports about National Institute of Technology (NIT) is slightly better as overall presence of female students is about 18% but overall girls presence is better in the management courses.

According to the data, 2997 candidates got admission in various PGP programmes at different IIMs during 2011-12. Number of female candidates was 516. On the other hand out of 51611 students of IITs only 7595 students are female. There are 9756 students are girls while out of total 53708 students for 2010-11 sessions.

According to the experts, medical profession is still luring female candidates the most but management is another important field where they are focussing now. According to Ashish Kumar, a management consultant, Human Resource Mangement is the most favourite area for them in this regard.

There is another interesting fact is that a good number of management students are belongs to engineering stream. This is true for both male and female candidates. Some people look into online
MBA programs when they want to learn more about management.
In a big relief to the candidates aspiring for IIMs through CAT the admission policy of IIMs will be changed. The sacrosanct admission policy of each IIMs will be replaced by students friendly admission process. IIMs will exchange their information regarding admission and also co-ordinate their counseling systems.

This has been decided in a meeting of IIM Council, chaired by Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal and attended by Union Minister for State for HRD D. Purandeshwari Devi, Secretary, Higher Education and directors of various IIMs.

Till now the admission policies of different IIMs are not same though they take admission on the basis of CAT scores only.
Prestigious Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) of Delhi University will give admission to the aspirants through Common Admission Test (CAT) organized by IIMs. This has been decided in a meeting of board of faculty members of FMS. Earlier, admission in MBA courses was based on an all India test conducted by FMS every year. The pattern of the test was quite different to those of CAT test and it included subjective type questions and essay writing too. But, Delhi University administration denied permission to conduct such examination this year.

In such a situation several other options were discussed for admission in MBA programmes. According to sources it was common feeling that organizing such examination at all India level is an expensive option. Considering the lesser number of applicants for the courses from other cities of the country it is not a feasible option for the university. In such a situation CAT, GRE, GMAT and MAT were discussed for the admission process. But most of the members favoured CAT considering its track record and level of efficiency for the selection of the right candidate.

Renewable energy and non-polluting small power generation units could not get popularity in India despite its huge potential in Indian environment but several institutions of UK have come ahead to research in this area in collaboration with top Indian institutions.

Several projects in this regard have been decided in a meeting, held in London this week. The meeting was chaired by Dr. R. Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India. The projects finalised in the meeting include ‘Rural Hybrid Energy Enterprise Systems’, ‘Development and Integration of Biomass and Concentration Photovoltaic System for Rural and Urban Energy Bridge: BioCPV and several others related to rural system and fuel energy system.

Research Councils UK and Department of Science and Technology (DST), India will extend financial support to such projects. Indian Institute of Science and University of Nottingham will work on the small scale energy generation system in rural areas to fulfil the energy needs in both India and UK and revenue generation through the project ‘Rural Hybrid Energy Enterprise Systems’.

Vishva-Bharti University and Heriot-Watt university will work on the project ‘Development and Integration of Biomass and Concentrating Photovoltaic System for Rural and Urban Energy Bridge: BioCPV’ to develop an integrated system of solar fuel cell, biomass and waste power generation.

Several other projects like ‘Scaling the Rural Enterprise’ led by University of Nottingham and the Society for Economic and Social studies, ‘TRUMP: A Trusted Mobile Platform for the Self-Management of Chronic Illness in Rural Areas’ led by University of Aberdeen and IIM, Ahmedabad and several others too have been finalised in the meeting.
