‘Genome sequencing’, one of the most ambitious projects of Genetic engineering and Bio-technology will be very economical in the coming years. Experts say that cost of genome sequencing will be reduce to just $1000 in coming years and affordable to the common people for medical related tests.

“The genome sequencing costs are expected to come down to just 1000 dollars in the next 5 years”, said Prof. N. Yathindra, Director, Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology (IBAB).

“By 2040, every individual in the US will get his genome sequence mapped. This will help in finding out his or her propensity to get serious diseases like cancers”, he said while forming an association with IGNOU through MoU. IGNOU and IBAB entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a joint Centre of Excellence at the IBAB Campus, Bangalore and to launch MSc. Programme in Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology.

The MSc. Programme will be run at the campus of IBAB, Bangalore and is expected to start soon.
Genome sequencing has been an ambitious project not just for India’s CSIR but for the world in the recent times. Scientists of CSIR have recently successfully completed genome sequencing of human and some of the mammals.
