After spate of complaints about economic and emotional exploitation of the students and parents by various schools affiliated with Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) the board has pitched in and asked schools to stay away from the such activities of exploitation of parents and students.

In its recent communication Vineet Joshi, Chairman, CBSE has clearly said that the schools should desist from exploiting parents by opening book shops or uniform centres which prescribe branded accessories, shoes etc. at inflated costs. This is very common complaints of the parents and students of public schools that they have to buy uniforms and other accessories from the school’s shop at inflated costs.

The CBSE Chairman has also instructed the school administration to treat schools as ideological institution and not factories and protection of children rights should be respected as they are sensitive individuals. “All students, irrespective of their differences in physical,
social, economic status or by their being differently-abled are dealt with in a dignified
manner”, it says.

It has also said to take care about the students of senior classes and allow them to take informed decision as the adolescents are vulnerable.

Foreign students will get admission in NITs (National Institute of Technology) and various other engineering colleges in India through AIEEE examination in coming years. Government has approved the scheme ‘in principle’ in a high level meeting chaired by Indian HRD Minister Kapil Sibal.

An on-line examination will be conducted by CBSE through AIEEE at international level for foreign students to promote India’s engineering education throughout the world. Scheme of DASA (Direct Admission for Students from Abroad) was also discussed during the meeting for the admission of foreign students in the engineering colleges. However, no consensus was made on the scheme. It is notable that the scheme was earlier used to provide admission to the foreign students at IITs. But after concern raised from various quarters the scheme was withdrawn.

Several other important decisions were taken during the 2nd NIT Council meeting, in New Delhi. A review committee of the NIT system under the chairmanship of Anil K.Kakodkar was also formed during the meeting.

Admission policies for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes were also reviewed in the NIT Council meeting. Sibal also advocated a centralized admission system for M.Tech courses like AIEEE. A committee to provide merit scholarship to deserving UG students was also constituted in the meeting.

Better networking amongst IITs, NITs and other institutions was also emphasized during the meeting. Sibal said that in order to promote better coordination the directors and chairpersons of IITs and NITs must meet once a year to discuss larger issues connected with technical education and research.

By Chandan Sharma
What is common among Kanchak Kumar Kandpal of Bharti Shahid Sainik School, Nanital, Uttarakhand Gyanprakash Verma of SS Higher Secondary School, Barabanki, UP or Prakash Jyoti Kalita, of Sankardev Shishu Vidya Niketan Pathsala, Barpeta, Assam? All these are toppers of class 12th exams in their respective states but they could not able to get admission in popular courses like Commerce, Economics at the top colleges of Delhi University on the basis their first cut-off. Leave SRCC, these toppers could not able to ensure a seat even in colleges like Hansraj, Hindu, LSR College or so called top rated college of Delhi University, which claim to represent best talents of all the states’ through their ‘fair and transparent’ selection system based. The system completely based on CBSE’s mark only.

As a result Gyanprakash Verma, topper of the UP Board with 94%, Kanchak Kumar of Uttarakahand with 95.20% or Kalita, topper of Assam with 95% marks are not able to get a seat on the basis of the first cut-off of Delhi University in any popular course at any top rated college. Remember Gyan Prakash is topper of the state where 19 lakh students appeared in the examination. The case is not much different to other state toppers.

Irony is that the same colleges admit 400 or 1000 plus rank holders in the merit list of CBSE without any hitch. Nothing can be ironical or nightmarish for student community like it in the country. The toppers of the 28 states of the country could not be accommodated by the best colleges of the largest central university of the country but 1000 plus rank holders get easy entry in DU. These state toppers have to face such kind of irony throughout their career in life for which they have never been responsible. Their selection, promotion too are based on the marks. Despite being toppers they suffer throughout the life under this marking or evaluation system.

Everybody, associated with education system knows that the question and evaluation pattern of CBSE have been prepared in such a way that student could score upto 100% marks. State boards have been conservative in giving marks in this regard except some of the exception like Tamilnadu where the board has been liberal enough to give marks in evaluation so that a student could score upto 100%. But evaluation systems are not same throughout the country. They do not believe in ‘inflation of marks’. But the largest central university has the singular and faulty selection system to give admission to the students.

The system of normalization, which has been followed by BITS, Pilani for a long time, could be appreciated where marks of every state board used to be normalized. Topper of every state board get 100 percent and performance of the rest of the people is judged by proportionately. There may be other shortcomings in the system but the system provide ample space for bright students of all state boards.

There has been much debate on the issue of 100% cut off of the two colleges of Delhi University i.e SRCC for B.Com and LSR for Psychology. Even the Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal intervened into the matter saying the cut-off absurd and gave instruction to Delhi University Vice Chancellor Prof. Dinesh Singh to look into the matter.

But for bright managers of any institution knows the meaning of 100%. Students who could deliver 100% will prove bright managers too in the future. Fortunately or unfortunately, SRCC is known as the paradise of toppers as well as future managers as it teaches just two subjects Commerce and Economics at undergraduate level. So there is nothing wrong if it demands 100%. The idea is simple if the college does not get right student it will have to release second list with reduced cut-off. There should be no surprise if the college management gets such kind of candidates (with 100%) too. In fact this has happened this time. But the problem with the SRCC or such colleges is that they are nor impartial to toppers of other states.

There is need for serious reforms in the selection process. The most interesting part is whenever the question is raised it is easily said that interview GD should be introduced. This is again mockery of our own education system. The student, who has devoted 14 years to get the 12th examination certificate, finds that his whole labour, dedication have gone waste when he or she does not get even admission on the basis of marks he obtained in the examination.

The present system again promote a kind of monopoly in the system too. It is open secret that CBSE gets its maximum number of students from Delhi as over 1700 government and private schools in the capital are affiliated with CBSE. So Delhi University provides a kind of automatic reservation to the students of Delhi leaving its Central University character. This must be changed with reasonable, transparent and better system so that students of all boards, who work hard to become numero uno in their states, get justice during the admission into a central university like DU or any other university. Minstry of HRD too should pitch in seriously so that bright students of the country get justice in the environment of mad rush of marks and cut-off.

What is the success mantra to become a topper? Good blend of study and relaxation through games and other techniques are the secret of success, say toppers of CBSE examination. Another important thing is enjoy your study if you want to excel in your field and also choose the subject at 10+2 level that you really want to study.

“I do not study throughout the day but do it strategically. I used to chalk out a plan for examination and study accordingly”, says Chinmay Goel of Modern School, who scored 97.6% in Commerce stream. He says that relaxation is equally important during the preparation.

Dravyansh, a student of DPS Ghaziabad, says enjoying long hour of study is also important for a student. Though he did not expect to score exactly 98.6, as he scored in 10th and become topper in CBSE exam, but he said that keeping target high used to give better result.

“Regular study upto 10 hours is enough”, says Nikhil Pandhi of Vasant Valley School who scored 97% in Humanities. But it is important that you should enjoy your study. Relaxation is equally important. Walking or participation in games is good for concentration on study, he adds.

A student needs to be kept himself aloof of all distractions like watching TV, movies, social networking, chatting etc. if he or she really wants to excel in study. Problem with these distractions is that you can not think about wastage of time when you start participating in these activities, says Poonam Gupta of Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidyalaya, who scored 93.4 percent in the exams.
