The capital city Delhi has over 6.2 million vehicles. The figure was quoted by Delhi’s Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today inaugurating a symposium on Public Transportation in Indian cities. She said that the number of vehicle is greater than that of India’s other three metro cities (Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai) combined and around 1000 new vehicles hit the street everyday in Delhi.

According to her the Metro and BRT corridor are bringing remarkable change in the city transport by providing city’s commuters quick, safe, pollution-free and comfortable transport system. Mentioning BRT System, Dikshit stated that the decision to stay the course with BRT is part of taking a long-term view that is now starting to bear fruit as increasing number of bus passengers and cyclists on the corridor is beginning to show. She also announced that 14.5 kms. corridor from Moolchand to Delhi Gate is ready for commissioning.

Aiming to make journey comfortable and reliable between airport and important places in the capital city Delhi, an MoU was signed today between Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) & Urban Mass Transport Company (UMTC) Ltd. today. The aim is to provide a high quality, reliable, comfortable, luxury mini bus 8 to 10 seater service between Airport and city and vice-versa.
In view of the rapidly growing airline passenger traffic, there has been severe congestion in and around the airport. Since airline traffic is projected to continue growing, the situation would only get worse. In order to mitigate this situation, DTC proposes to operate high-quality bus services from multiple points in the city to the airport. This would enable airline passengers and airport employees to use convenient public transport to reach the airport. For this purpose, DTC will be contracting with the UMTC to manage and operate the services, as per an MoU signed today in the presence of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

Based on studies, UMTC has identified the following 17 locations from where services would be run i.e. ITO, Rohini, ISBT, Anand Vihar Terminal, Mayur Vihar-Nizamuddin Railway Station, Vikaspuri-Janakpuri, Dwarka, Naraina-Delhi Cantt., Vasant Kunj, Sarita Vihar-Sainik Farms, Greater Kailash, IHC-Lodhi Road-Bhikaji Cama Place, Chanakyapuri, Ghaziabad, Noida, Faridabad and Gurgaon-Udyog Vihar.

Services would initially start from two locations, namely ISBT and Anand Vihar, on a pilot basis. Based on experience, they would be rolled out to the remaining locations. The proposal is to operate mini buses which would normally accommodate 14-16 passengers. However, they would be modified to seat only 8-10 passengers, so that wider and more comfortable seats as well as space for luggage can be accommodated within the vehicle. The buses would be air-conditioned, with pleasing interiors and a distinctive look. They would be operated at a frequency of 3 per hour i.e. every 20 minutes to ensure reliability in service.

A number of value-added features are also proposed as part of the services. Some of these are:-on-board camera for greater safety of passengers, baggage handling facilities to assist passengers, check-in assistance at the airport, meet & greet services for arriving passengers, web-based ticket purchase facility, power socket for laptop use and mobile charging and monthly discounted pass.

Possibility of taxi linkage for last-mile connectivity is also being explored and will be added during the roll out phase. The fares would be competitive compared to other modes of travel. Pilot services are expected to be rolled out within few months, with suitable up-scaling to be done in time for the Commonwealth Games.
