Taking cue from recent decision of Delhi Government to establish Women Technical University in the capital city the main regulatory body of higher education University Grant Commission (UGC) has planned to set up 20 women universities in the country. UGC has also asked four time increase in its 12th five-year plan. However, it is not clear that the plan is just to attract the fund from the government or the UGC is serious about it as no concrete decision has been taken on selection of cities to set up these universities.
The UGC has been facing serious criticism for not updating its list of fake universities and institutions and its inability and willingness to take strong action against such institutions. The recent proposal is being seen among the educational communities as just image building exercise. It is notable that the city government had taken decision in its cabinet meeting to set up a women university in Delhi. In fact, decision in this regard had been taken over 18 months ago at policy level.
