Summer is at its peak in Delhi these days. Schools are closed. But think about those students who sweat at stadiums at 45 degree Celsius. About four to five thousand students or budding sportspersons get admission for training in various disciplines of sports in these summer camp in Delhi. These camps are organised by Sports Authority of India and Education Department of Delhi Government.

These summer camps are actually factory of sportspersons of the country. Several budding players of national and international level emerged during the camp, says a player who attended the summer camp earlier. Though there are several schools in the capital to provide training to the budding sportsperson in their campus but the summer camp is completely different. Here a candidate meet other candidates with different calibers and get real competition.

“It is encouraging that a good number of girl students too participate in such camps from Delhi’s schools. Earlier their participation was limited to schools only”, says Rakesh Mohan, Principal Secretary (Education), Delhi.

“We used to get 125 to 150 budding players having potential to represent the state at national and international level through these camps. Depending upon the requirements we send such selected candidates for further training at SAI and other training centres for advanced training”, says Satpal, Chief Co-ordinator (Sports) and Additional Director, Education, Delhi.

There are government coaches and trainers to train the people. But this time several new sportspersons too join them to provide them training, he adds. These include winners of Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. This will help the newcomers to understand international standard of sports.

Winners of Asian Games at Guangzhou and Commonwealth Games from Delhi will soon get certificates and appreciation letters from Delhi government. After cash prizes of over 2.80 crore to 19 sportspersons belong to Delhi the city government is working on it.

“Delhi government will present certificates soon to all the award winner sportspersons”, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said during an award ceremony, organised recently at Delhi Seretariat. She also exhorted all the sportspersons to provide training to students and budding players of Delhi so that they (budding players) could maintain Delhi’s legacy.

“You (players) are real heroes and heroines for us”, Chief Minister said while motivating them to train the new generation of sportspersons.

The sportspersons include Ronjon Sodhi, Manavjeet Singh Sandhu, Samresh Jung, Mansher Singh, Sonia Rai, Deepak Sharma, Vikram Bhatnagar in Shooting, Shushil Kumar, Ravinder Kumar, Yogeshwar Dutt, Joginder Kumar, Anil Kumar, Dharmender Dalal, in wrestling, Pooja Sharma, Rakesh Kumar, Manjit Chhillar, Anoop Kumar, Navneet Gautam in Kabaddi.

“It is a good step. We used to get memento, medals, cash prizes from the government but not the certificate. This is first time that any government or government organization is planning to give us certificate”, Pooja Sharma, an awardee and player of Indian Women Kabaddi team at Asian Games in China, told fachcha.com. Pooja was the only player from Delhi in the team.

“We can not carry our medals or cash prizes everywhere. But we can carry our certificates, says Joginder Kumar.

However, it is not clear that certificate will be given to their coaches too. But senior officials of the Delhi Government say that certificates will be prepared for both sportspersons as well as their coach who received cash prizes during the ceremony on 18th April.

Coaches were awarded of Rs. five lakh each for their ability to train and produce international level sportspersons. These include Satpal, Ramphal Mann, Ashok Kumar, Wing Commandar Jaikishan, Yashvir Singh, Rajbir Singh, Satnarain Sharma, Ved Prakash and Ranbir Singh.
