The great Indian rope-trick of Delhi University

This is a kind of great Indian rope-trick in which magicians in the past time used to do a magic by throwing a rope in the sky without any base or knot and try to ride on it. Exactly this is happening in Delhi University, at least in front of semester system at the undergraduate level.

Failed to resolve the issue amicably with the teachers (read DUTA) and students (read DUSU), Delhi University (read Vice Chancellor) now put the onus on the first year’s freshers (or fachchas) of science courses and their parents to implement the semester system anyhow. By making announcement for the examination in November-December under the semester system the university administration has put its burden on fachchas to prepare themselves B Sc. Mathematics (Hons.) like situation in which over 40 percent students declared failed due to arbitrate imposition of new course and without orientation of the teachers for the purpose. A big number of students are still making demonstrations and going from pillar to post to improve their result. It is another fact that despite several representations their problems have not been resolved as yet and DU administration (including Vice Chancellor) instead of solving their problem giving new statements and excuses in the media to avoid them.

The same example is waiting to happen in other science courses too, those have been ‘declared’ as part of revised syllabus or say under semester system. Fact is that the over 90 percent colleges are still teaching these courses under annual mode. Even many colleges have mentioned annual mode in their prospectuses too. There are about 30 colleges where science courses are available but most of them have not even prepared time-table according to the semester system.

Moreover, admissions in colleges are still on and month of August is coming to an end. October, at least two week of the month, will be dedicated to the Commonwealth Games completely. In such a case freshers (and their parents too, as directed by the DU) have hardly 45 to 60 days to prepare themselves for the first semester examination of the wrongly and half-baked imposed semester system. It is notable that Mathematics and English, both the important components of B.Sc. courses are yet to be revised. What will ultimately happen, only freshers or fachcha will have to face. Neither the teachers nor the college administration or Vice Chancellor (whose term is being completed this month) will face its severe impact. Throughout the career these students of the science courses will have to bear the burnt of so called ‘prestige issue’ of the DU administration or say outgoing Vice Chancellor on the name of implementation of semester system.

But these things do not disturb him, whether teachers protest for it or students oppose it. After all, he is ready to say the university ‘Good Bye’ in next few days. After that, neither the students nor their problems will be his concerns.
