Scientists were making efforts to contact the non-responsive Spirit Mars rover, which has lost contact with Earth during the Martian winter prompting fears that it might be permanently lost.

Unhappy over arbitrary fee hikes in private schools across the county, the All India Parents Association Saturday asked the National Advisory Council Chairperson Sonia Gandhi to recommend to the central government bringing a law to regulate fees in schools.
The association in a letter to Gandhi said that while the government schools lack basic academic infrastructure, the good quality unaided private schools exploit the parents by charging huge amounts.

Marred by increasing incidents of violence involving student leaders of rival political parties, Panjab University (PU) here is set to introduce stringent measures to curb them.
According to Chandigarh police records, at least 33 criminal cases related to violence involving PU’s rival political groups have been registered and over 90 people have been arrested or detained for questioning since 2005.
Most of the brawls at the PU campus occur because of election-related issues. Hence, the PU officials have issued directions that elections, usually held in September, will be cancelled if any such incident happens.
“We are worried about the increasing incidents of violence in the campus and are making every effort to control them. We have made it clear that no election in the Panjab University will be allowed if even a single violent incident is reported,” PU’s Dean Students’ Welfare (DSW), Naval Kishore said here Saturday. The senior selection committee Saturday decided to rest Sachin Tendulkar and Harbhajan Singh and recalled Yuvraj Singh in the 15-member Indian cricket squad for the tri-series in Sri Lanka, involving New Zealand as the third team, starting Aug 10.

Sibal Sharing his vision of a society where every child should have the opportunity to go to school and be able to pursue higher studies irrespective of paying capacity, Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal Saturday said illiteracy should not be a barrier to progress.
Speaking at the inaugural function of the golden jubilee celebrations of the Indo-American Society, he said: “There are 220 million children who go to school, out of which 14 million students reach the college level. Canada-based Lisa Ray is in no hurry to act and is instead keen to spread cancer awareness and write a book. “I am engaging with the world, but with a different quality now,” says the model-actress who is leading a healthy life after fighting a rare cancer of plasma cells.
